ARTIST STATEMENT
Painting brings me joy! I enjoy both Abstract and representational art and constantly moving towards a mix of both. I want to break down the realistic form into simple shapes in order to reveal that one thing which brings wonder and excitement to my subject. My ongoing series “The Shape of Light” aims to see the subject matter as a simple collection of shapes, to uncover its essence. I am drawn to the question “what if?”...the quest for what I am capable of finding today. The ongoing uncertainty which unfolds during a piece has become exciting and makes me come back to the studio often, compelling me to do the work I am doing now. I am moved by lots of art, but the overwhelming aspects that excite me are light, line, and simplicity of shape in the complex subject.I currently work with acrylics (adding pencil, crayon and marker) on multiple paintings at one time. This allows time and distance to find the magic, to play freely between canvases without being too focused on any one result. It's also been interesting to me on how line can impact a painting. It's subtle and “not so subtle” presence. To me, it invokes a feeling of “unfinished” and “raw”, thus allowing the viewer to be a part of the painting's history. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I have enjoyed creating it.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Chantal, a Canadian artist from a large French Canadian family, has displayed a natural talent for drawing since childhood. While her life led her beyond the path of a full-time art career, her passion for painting remained steadfast.
From an early age, Chantal nurtured her creative instincts, and as she navigated a busy traditional life, she consistently carved out time to pursue her art, when time allowed. She began with watercolors, moved to oils, and now works primarily in acrylics. Largely self-taught, Chantal has refined her skills through years of dedicated study, including classes, workshops, and art books. Her journey has been enriched by learning from many accomplished artists, continually shaping and elevating her artistic expression. She continues her quest for meaningful art in her home studio in Raleigh, North Carolina.
