ABOUT KAREN ROSE
Karen Rose is a landscape-based artist whose work explores place through observation, memory, and material process. Her imagery evolves through a studio practice grounded in painting and printmaking, where structure, gesture, and atmosphere are developed through both intuition and intention.
Her work reflects, in part, her Mexican American heritage, while remaining attentive to the landscapes she moves through and between. For this exhibition, Rose focuses on North Carolina, where imagery connected to farmworkers emerges within the landscape, bringing attention to the people who shape and sustain it.
Rose holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She has participated in a printmaking residency at La Maldita Estampa in Barcelona, supported by a North Carolina arts grant, and was awarded a Kivunim Fellowship to Morocco.
She maintains a studio practice in both Richmond, California, and Raleigh, North Carolina, and currently teaches at the Urban School of San Francisco, California.
ABOUT MAUREEN O'NEILL
Maureen O’Neill creates pastel drawings and landscapes shaped by observed spatial experiences and a commitment to seeing, remembering, and feeling. Images are found in the process of making—emerging, at times deconstructed into shapes, and rebuilt mark by mark in the studio—keeping possibilities open as she searches for the work.
Drawn to the physicality, luminosity, and changing texture of pastel, her practice combines observation with invention, with an emphasis on process and presence. Landscapes, altars, doorways, and windows act as visual portals into liminal spaces, revealing emotional and spiritual moments within daily life.
O’Neill holds a B.F.A. in Painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and an M.F.A. in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is Director of Exhibitions and Educational Programming for the Barton College Art Galleries and Assistant Professor of Art at Barton College.
She has developed and continues to teach an ongoing Drawing Meditation workshop at the North Carolina Museum of Art and at the Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center in Abiquiú, New Mexico. She currently lives in Tarboro, North Carolina.
ABOUT THE SHOW
The Edge Wilson Gallery is honored to present the work of Rose and O’Neill. Each brings a distinct voice, along with years of teaching at a high level and a strong presence exhibiting nationally.
This pairing felt natural. While their work is uniquely their own, their visual themes and strong use of palette sit beautifully in the same space. Both draw the viewer in—through color, perspective, and gesture—leaving room for a personal story to unfold in the moment.

LANDSCAPES + BUDAS

The LANDSCAPES are my escape into memories from travel, created by how I remember mood, color and terrain, rather being renderings of actual places. The paintings on show are my current versions of what I started practicing in high school. That is another story.
While the BUDAS continue the work from my recent Cape Town show—now expanded with new pieces.
I’ve been painting these images for almost a decade now—Buda-like figures I return to again and again, working through repetition, process, and a mix of materials. What began as a spontaneous response during the renovation of The Edge has grown into an ongoing visual language for me.
The Cape Town show brought connection and momentum. No matter where I go, the same imagery seems to find its way into the work—morphing through different materials and processes.
All welcome. Open by chance or by appointment until we return to regular hours starting May 15, 2026.

BUDAS

The BUDAS is a collection of work centered on imagery I’ve been exploring for years.
Our time in Kalk Bay was incredibly special—we met wonderful people from near and far, and I’m so grateful for the kindness and support we received.
A highlight of the show was the acquisition of Night & Day, a large canvas now installed in the main teaching hall of the Coogee Buddhist Centre in Sydney. It’s an honor to have the work live in that kind of space.
Collectors from around the world—Germany, England, and the U.S.—took pieces home, along with yoga instructors, designers, and others drawn to the sense of calm and connection in the work.
This body of work continues to center on Buda-like figures I return to again and again, working through repetition, process, and a range of materials. What began during the renovation of The Edge has grown into an ongoing visual language for me.
BUDAS is a collection of artwork featuring imagery I’ve been exploring creatively for several years, and now it has brought me full circle to where the art fits in and I belong.
